Modular power meter with MODBUS-RTU™ interface for electrical power distribution systems.

Abstract:

The energy transition requires better control of the electricity distribution network.
The growth of consumption and self production can overload the HV-transformer or power lines.
Knowing that in a transformer station there are around 40 cables leaving, measuring each line gives an lot cables

The modular system minimizes the number of cables necessary, by using one voltage sensor and different current modules that can be clicked contactless over the power cables.
Our click and play concept, frees a user from any set-up or configuration.

Concept:

A master system or PLC with MODBUS RTU interface is coupled to the first element cascade.
The different modules are placed in a chain, to become a cascaded multi channel meter.
The first module is the Volt1000 which samples the voltages L1,L2,L3 and N and send them to the following modules.
The following, up-to 15 modules, have 4 current sensors each, (L1,L2,L3,N) are connected by patch cables (RJ45-UTP). The number of branches can be extended upto 30 by using 2 Volt1000.
An alternative form with 4 extra I/O's will be released in 2024-Q3 Volt1000S.

A mix of RoCo's and, with less required space, the Cube can be used.
Modular meter

Only one cable should be connected to the master system to measure up-to 60 power lines.
This modular system consist of a voltage module (Volt1000) that measures L1,L2,L3,N, and one up to fifteen current modules (RoCo or Cube) that measures power and current.
In other words, for up to fifteen 3-phase+N outgoing power lines, it is possible to measure the voltage, current and power for the 3 phases and the voltage & current in the Neutral.
Each module contains multiple analog to digital convertors, so all voltages and currents are measured synchronously, without multiplexing.

The Volt1000 is always connected to the MODBUS-RTU master via a RJ45-in plug that also supports the 24V power for the whole metering system. See also MODBUS addressing
Alternatively a RoCo/Cube module can act as the first element, but than only current can be measured.
The RJ45-out plug is the start of the meter bus and the point to point (PP) connection to the next module.
